ArtFight is more than halfway over! Here are the drawings I did in Week 3:
Original Character: Vladimir from Saint_Judas
Technique Notes: One of Vladimir's roles is to patrol the tunnels in his area, so I tried to depict him with a light source coming from the left side with some shadows and highlights. I also coloured outside the lines deliberately (scandal! lol), again, for a looser look.
I like: The way I drew his hair -- the linework is loose and (I hope) matches his curly hair. The expression on his face, especially his mouth.
Could Improve: I could have pushed the shadows much deeper and made it a bit more ominous. Perhaps next time!
Original Character: Mary the Microwave from Lizzie3_14159
Technique Notes: It was a different challenge to draw a shape with straight, boxy lines. I used a different brush to give crisper edges, and varied the thickness to draw the details. I used a photograph for the background, as I wanted to draw her in a kitchen, but wasn't confident (or patient!) enough to draw a full scene. She is meant to be a very old model, and I imagined her in a 1970s kitchen.
I like: Her face is sweet and expressive. Using the brush at different thicknesses gave the impression of a mechanical object quite well, I think. The programme selections are a little dig at the kinds of things microwaves were advertised as being able to cook when they first came out. XD
Could Improve: The perspective is all wrong and some of the lines are a little wobbly, but actually, I like that. It's quirky.
Original Character: Em from Stunt22 ~ Em is a nurse android
Technique Notes: I decided to switch from using "Pencil" brush to "Brush" brush (lol) for the outlines. I like the more crisp and solid line. For the colourwork, I changed from "Chisel Marker" to "Classic Comics Nib". It's a solid brush, so I don't need to go over it multiple times to get full coverage. It makes colouring in much faster!
I like: The hand is quite good, considering I didn't use a reference, heh. Em is very shy, so I depicted her holding her tablet to her chest in a closed pose. In the original, she has a pink flower elsewhere on her outfit, so I converted it into a ponytail decoration and made it pointed to match the robotic and futuristic theme.
Could Improve: When I don't use a reference, my drawings always end up with huge eyes and attenuated necks for some reason. As for the background, I was just mucking around with different brushes and didn't really think too much about making it match the theme.
Original Character: Arthur Williams from Ryley
Technique Notes: This was meant to be a "quick" sketch, maybe 15 minutes, but it ended up taking an hour! I used 3 different references -- for the body/pose, the hair and the glasses. I had seen someone else do a sketch with a single colour roughly applied over the whole drawing. I really liked the idea, so I decided to give it a go. Arthur is a classical academic, so of course I had to depict him reading.
I like: I tried drawing a few lines to indicate folds in the clothing. I tried not to overwork it, using as few lines as possible, and I think that worked out pretty well. Having a contrasting colour behind really brings out the sketch.
Could Improve: Even using a reference, I don't like how the hair worked out. I struggle with depicting short hair, to be honest. The hand is a bit janky, but passable.
This week was a little slow as I had other commitments, but things really ramped up in the last week, so stick around for that!
